Sulai Zhuang
Established 70 years ago and now run by the third generation, Sulai Zhuang serves meatballs (ba-wan), taro cakes, and various soups. The shop is clean and bright, decorated with nostalgic items. Their cup-shaped ba-wan is made from freshly ground indica rice batter prepared daily, then oil-poached to maintain its elasticity. The filling includes pork shoulder, shiitake mushrooms, and chestnuts. Topped with the shop’s house-made dark sauce, it offers a uniquely balanced sweet-savory flavor. Adding minced garlic or fresh chili sauce is recommended to enrich the taste, and it pairs wonderfully with a steaming hot Four-Herb Soup.

No extra sugar or artificial flavoring is added throughout the process, resulting in a snack that is sweet but not heavy, richly aromatic, and non-sticky—an iconic old-fashioned treat that has accompanied many Taiwanese people as they grew up.
